The Guts

by Roddy Doyle

The Guts is one of those rare books I could happily read from every day for the rest of my life. Doyle’s voice is distinct, funny, sharp, and full of heart; this novel is a perfect example of why he’s easily among my favorite authors. With a balance of humor and vulnerability in a way that feels completely authentic, the story addresses aging, illness, music, and family, but told with such levity and depth that it never feels heavy. I laughed out loud more than once, but I also found myself genuinely moved.
