Twist
by Colum McCann
I listened to Twist as an audiobook, and this is one of those rare exceptions to the rule that authors shouldn’t narrate their own work. Colum McCann’s calming lilt is fitting here and brings a rhythm to the story that elevates the entire experience. It was so compelling, I ended up purchasing the hardcover and read it as well.
The Conway irony is sharp and layered, and I found myself thinking about him long after I finished. And who knew underwater cable repair could be so fascinating? The depth of research that must have gone into this is staggering, but it never feels heavy; it’s woven seamlessly into the narrative. This is one of the best books I’ve read this year. Smart, moving, unexpected, and elegantly crafted.
