Happy All the Time
by Laurie Colwin
Laurie Colwin had a singular voice and lived a life I envy — New York City, writing, cooking — everything. Happy All the Time offers strong main character development and an evocative old-NY atmosphere. Though well-written and charming, the novel doesn’t quite withstand the test of modernity, not necessarily Colwin’s fault, as the city itself has transformed beyond recognition. The story carries a somewhat distracting “rich kid” tone, and the secondary characters contribute little to the larger narrative. That being said, I do still appreciate her writing.
