by Barbara Kingsolver

There’s a reason this novel is an award winner. Demon Copperhead is a monster of a book in so many ways. I'm left in awe of how Kingsolver managed to turn such a depressing, often disturbing subject into a great read. The story of Damon Fields, a boy born into poverty in Appalachia, is an unflinching glimpse at addiction, neglect, and systemic hardship. Kingsolver doesn't shy away from the brutal realities of his life; she crafts a narrative that is so compelling and full of heart that I didn’t want to leave it behind. The experience was both devastating and affirming at the same time. While it was difficult to read Demon’s challenges, his resilience left me with a sense of hope.
