The Hiding Season

by Ava Glass

I found The Hiding Season to be an interesting, fast-moving read that held my attention throughout, even when it didn’t quite bring anything too memorable or elevated. The premise — a woman starting over in isolation who becomes the sole witness to a crime — has enough tension to carry the story, and it definitely leans into that page-turning, suspense-driven energy. That said, it never felt like high literature, and at times the plot and relationships drifted into something a little too melodramatic, almost soap-opera in tone, which undercut some of the stakes for me. Still, I can’t deny that I was entertained and kept reading, which counts for something, even if I wanted it to be a bit sharper and more grounded overall.
