Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance

by Alison Espach

Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance begins with a devastating premise: a young girl's older sister dies, and the novel follows the aftermath as her family struggles to make sense of a loss that reshapes every relationship and every future they imagined. What I loved most was Alison Espach's intriguing, almost journal-like storytelling style, which creates an intimate feeling of looking back through years of grief, memory, and longing. The novel never feels melodramatic; instead, Espach brings a refreshing honesty to the way people actually live with tragedy, showing how loss lingers, changes form, and becomes woven into everyday life. I especially appreciated that she resisted the urge to tie everything up neatly. Like real life, some questions remain unanswered and some wounds never fully heal, which made the story feel all the more authentic and memorable.
