House in the Pines
Ann Reyes
The House in the Pines attempts to blend psychological suspense with a dual-timeline structure, but not every novel needs to weave past and present together, nor does every thriller require a Girl on the Train-style twist. The pacing drags, the mystery feels underdeveloped, and the resolution lacks impact. While some may find the eerie atmosphere compelling, I found myself frustrated with the execution. This book pissed me off, and Reese couldn’t be more wrong about its appeal.
