Calamity Club

by Kathryn Stockett

I happily stayed with all 600-plus pages of Calamity Club because the rich storytelling and vivid character development made me deeply invested in the people at its heart. The author built a world I didn't want to leave and characters like Birdie, Meg, and Charlie, that I genuinely cared about. Unfortunately, the ending felt startlingly abrupt, offering little resolution after such a long journey. It was like climbing a mountain only to step off a cliff at the summit. For a novel that asked so much of its readers and earned that investment, the lack of a meaningful conclusion felt less like an artistic choice and more like a promise left unfulfilled.
